Our Journey to Parenthood: Month One

S
Sam & Jordan

We talked about having a baby for two years before we actually did anything about it. Not because we were not ready, but because the gap between wanting a child and knowing how to make it happen felt enormous. When we finally sat down together one Sunday morning, laptops open, mugs of coffee going cold, and started researching home insemination in earnest, something shifted. It stopped being this abstract future thing and became real. We ordered a kit, signed up for an ovulation tracking app, and told exactly one friend, mostly because we needed someone to text at midnight when the anxiety hit.

Month one was equal parts hopeful and humbling. We spent the first two weeks learning more about cycle tracking than either of us ever expected to know. Sam charted basal body temperature every morning before getting out of bed, and we both watched the ovulation test strips like they were pregnancy tests themselves. When the surge finally showed up on a Wednesday evening, we were as ready as we could be. The insemination itself was quiet and oddly tender, nothing like the clinical scene we had imagined. Afterward, we lay there for twenty minutes, holding hands, making bad jokes to fill the silence, and wondering if this was the moment everything would change.

The two-week wait that followed was, without exaggeration, the longest two weeks of our lives. Every twinge, every wave of nausea, every moment of fatigue became a potential sign. We learned quickly that the internet is both a gift and a curse during this phase. What helped most was connecting with other couples going through the same thing and reading practical guides like the ones on HomeInsemination.gay that reminded us we were not doing this alone. Month one did not end with a positive test, but it ended with something just as valuable: the knowledge that we could do this, that we were doing this, and that our family was already on its way.
